Future Champions Taylor and Davies Set To Shine In Domestic Tussle

Future Champions Taylor and Davies Set To Shine In Domestic Tussle
14:15, 04 Jul 2017

This weekend sees Josh Taylor and Ohara Davies square off in Glasgow in what could turn out to be one of the fights of the year. The two young British fighters might not be household names at the moment, but both have impressed so far in their young careers, and live in front of the Channel 5 cameras they are set to do battle in what could be one of the best domestic dust ups in recent memory.

The pair of them have traded insults over the past couple of years, and it is credit to both and their teams that the fights has been made at this stage of their pro careers.

The winner of this fight will be heading towards a world title fight at super lightweight, whilst the loser will be left to lick their wounds and rebuild which is why it is such a pivotal bout. Both men believe they are the best in the division, and with names like Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman lurking in and around the 140lbs-147lbs area, there really is a golden goose on the horizon for the winner.

Two Unbeaten Fighters Fighting For Domestic Bragging Rights

Both fighters are coming into this one with unbeaten records, and this bout will tell us plenty more about both, and their future prospects.

Ohara Davies is the flashier fighter with the KO power, as he showed last time out against the durable Derry Matthews, with the Londoner winning 12 of his 15 bouts thus far by way of KO or TKO. He goes into the Taylor fight as the WBC Silver Champion, and with slightly more experience in the bank, which he will be hoping gives him the edge.

Taylor has the amateur pedigree with a Gold Medal from the 2014 Commonwealth Games to his name, and since turning to the paid ranks, he has impressed under the tutelage of Shane McGuigan and Cyclone Promotions. Taylor fought for, and won, the Commonwealth strap on just his 7th career fight as a pro, and he has also been two America twice to fight, on the under-card of stable-mate Carl Frampton's fights against Leo Santa Cruz.

This fight raises echos of the clash between George Groves and James Degale early in their careers with both men considered two future world champions at super middleweight at the time. It was Groves who won that famous grudge match, but both men went on to be world champions, and ironically it was Degale who actually got his hands on world honours first.

As it stands, both Taylor and Davies are tipped to be future world champions, and both should be given credit for taking the fight at this stage, with plenty of easier fights out there for both men if they had chosen.

Forget talk of Anthony Joshua, Floyd Mayweather and Gennady Golovkin this weekend, and tune for what promises to be one of the highlights of the year. Two young British talents, both destined to be world champions, fighting live in a bragging rights contest on Channel 5 on Saturday night. We often see social media explode with anger in refusal to pay for the big box office events but there is no such excuse to miss this one, and it will be more than worthwhile tuning into this bout.

You may not have heard of Josh Taylor or Ohara Davies at the moment, but trust me, you will do soon.
