Gary Anderson produced a stunning nine-darter as he romped past Yorkshireman Joe Cullen in a 19-17 victory.
The incredible scenes took place during the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool to seal his place in the last four of the competition, and winning him an extra tidy £45,000 for the feat in the process.
Anderson ended the long wait of four excruciating years for someone to manage the achievement, having not managed it since 2014, but celebrated jubilantly with the crowd, as well as his congratulatory opponent Cullen.
The fans voices were in song as they rose with every sweetly struck dart hitting it’s target. When the double 12 struck, the crowd erupted.
Anderson revealed post-game, "I fancied hitting the nine-darter tonight. Hitting the nine-darter so early was actually the worst thing I did because it gave me time to think about it and I missed a lot more darts at tops than I normally do. Joe played well, he's been playing well for the last few games so it's great to get the win over a top player.”
Cullen would also reveal that he was ‘gutted’, but also that “Gary's a class player and good luck to him in the next round.”
Cullen seemed to be in control when the scores were 12-10 but 47-year-old Anderson bounced back brilliantly with three straight legs to lead 13-12.
The contest headed into a tie-break situation at 15-15 in an absolutely brilliant encounter for all observers in the North-West.
Anderson took advantage in the final straight, hitting double-20s to claim a well-played 19-17 victory.
Anderson will now face debutant Jeffrey de Zwaan in the final.
