Barcelona defender Gerard Pique wants to be the club's president when he retires from playing according to Mundo Deportivo.
The former Manchester United man who will be 32 in February has stated in the past that he wants to remain involved with the club when he hangs up his boots and the report suggests this could be sooner rather than later.
But rather than become an assistant coach or part of the technical staff, Pique has made it quite clear that he wants to be the club's president. Pique is frequently talked about as one of the game's deeper thinkers and his stance on such complex subjects as the future of Catalonia make him a figure who divides opinion.
The report in Mundo Deportivo explains: "Pique does not want to crawl on the playing fields and also has many challenges outside of them. The last and the biggest one that is being considered is to preside over the club of his loves, FC Barcelona."
Pique is going to target the club's presidency in 2021 when Josep Maria Bartomeu ends his term. Such is the respect which Pique commands at the club, it is unlikely that anyone will seriously challenge him for the role.
If Pique does take the top job, he will find jobs for many of his Barca team-mates includes Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol and Xavi. One of the biggest challenges he will face is the redevelopment of Camp Nou but he has also expressed a wish to develop a tennis section at Barca.
