Darts superstar Gerwyn Price is set to swap the oche for the squared circle, George Kambosos Jr is on course for his first lightweight title defence in June and Gennady Golovkin could be back in action in spring. Here’s what you might have missed in a busy week for boxing…

Darts Star Gerwyn Price Set For Boxing Debut

Rugby league, rugby union, darts… Gerwyn Price has enjoyed a remarkable career in the world of sport and now the Welshman is set for his boxing debut later this year.

The 2021 world champion made the surprise announcement on Instagram and said that his debut bout will take place against Rhys "Cool Fly & Flashy" Evans at the Valley Tavern in Fleur De Lys, Wales on April 9.

The fight will take place between two rounds of Premier League Darts action, with the Iceman scheduled to face Peter Wright just five days after. Price, who played in the Welsh Premier Division during his rugby union days, has admitted that he will need to lose weight for his spring showdown, stating on his post, "Need to drop 10kg for this."

Kambosos Jr To Defend Titles In Melbourne On June 5th

Unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr will defend his titles for the first time on June 5 at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. Vasyl Lomachenko is the frontrunner to face the Australian, but Devin Haney’s name is also in the mix too.

Lomachenko, considered to be one of the finest boxers on the planet in recent years, lost his titles to Teofimo Lopez in a huge shock in 2020 but Lopez then lost those same titles to Kambosos Jr a little more than a year later, succumbing to a split decision defeat at Madison Square Garden.

"They are both still in the running," Kambosos told ABC. "I think Lomachenko has started to creep close to the finish line and that excites me big time because Lomachenko is a hell of a fighter, a guy who's won two Olympic gold medals, multiple world titles.

"But Devin Haney excites me a lot, too, because he does have that small, other little piece that he loves [the WBC belt].

Jaron Ennis, Custio Clayton Set For Welterweight Title Eliminator

Rising star Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is edging closer to a title shot with reports suggesting that the Philadelphian is set to take on Custio Clayton in an IBF eliminator in spring.

Errol Spence Jr is the current IBF king at 147lbs, along with holding the WBC strap, and he faces WBA champion Yordenis Ugas in a unification fight on April 16th, with the winner mandated to face the victor of Ennis and Clayton.

Ennis was last seen stopping Puerto Rico’s Thomas Dulorme inside a single round in October. Clayton, 34, represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games, reaching the quarter-finals. War Machine scored a 10-round unanimous-decision victory over Cameron Krael in December.

Geordie Shore Star Signs Multi-fight Deal With BOXXER

Former Geordie Shore star Aaron Chalmers has signed a multi-fight deal with BOXXER.

The reality TV star made a successful transition to mixed martial arts where he fought under the Bellator banner, one of MMA’s leading promotional companies, and recorded five wins from seven contests, two by way of first round knockout.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time in MMA but I always knew that boxing was where I wanted to be. Now I've got the chance to fulfil that dream and over the next few years I'm going to give it my all," said Chalmers.

Chalmers, 34, will be trained by Adam Booth, who guided world champions David Haye and George Groves amongst others.

Golovkin Begins Training For Rescheduled Showdown With Murata

Two-time middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is back in training ahead of his rescheduled showdown with Japan’s Ryota Murata.

The pair were set to go head-to-head in a unification bout in December, with GGG and Murata’s IBF and WBA straps on the line, respectively. However, it was postponed amid coronavirus restrictions and now looks to finally go ahead in April.

Golovkin posted on Instagram, "Happy to be back at training camp and to see my team.

"Hope that a date for the unification fight with Ryota Murata rescheduled for early April will be announced soon.

"I'm looking forward to travelling to Japan and to more BIG things in 2022."
