A week has now passed since Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder faced-off in one of the most enthralling and dramatic heavyweight title fights in recent years.
The bout ended in a split-decision draw, but you could argue that both fighters benefited from the result, as Tyson Fury produced a classy boxing display, while big-hitting Wilder earned two knockdowns during the titanic 12 round duel - undoubtedly a fight of the year contender.
Fury’s trainer Ben Davison, in his first fight overseeing The Gypsy King, is only 26-years-old but he has been showered in praise in the aftermath of the fight, and now BT Sport have released a compelling video which shows the interaction between Davison and Fury between rounds of the Los Angeles fight.
In the early stages of the fight Davison instructed Fury to keep his distance, and to not get too greedy or complacent as Wilder will deteriorate as the fight wears on. He informed his fighter that he was boxing beautifully, but warned him to be wary of the Wilder’s game plan as the American was attempting to step back and lead Fury in towards him.
As the fight reached the break after round five, Davison noted:
“He’s (Wilder) giving you this back and forth movement on his toes. That’s a mental break in concentration. That’s the point to feint him ok? Or if you’re front foot is close enough you can throw. When he gives you this look, stay in and go ok? That’s his mental break.”
Then a few rounds later, he told Fury:
“What did I tell you when we took this fight? You would beat him with your left hand yeah? Don’t worry about that, it will come naturally when it’s there. Don’t get greedy with that, don’t get complacent. You will beat him with you left hand alone!”
After round 10, Davison began to fully motivate Fury:
“Two rounds buddy. And it’s nearly going to be the greatest comeback in boxing history!
“If you’re feeling tired you’ve got to dig more than you’ve ever digged before in your life.”
Then, ahead of the final round the young trainer warned Fury that Wilder was “going to come like a bombard - whatever the “f*** a bombard is!”
