A bullish Paul Nicholls is expecting a ‘big run’ from Topofthegame as he reverts back to hurdling in search of the competitive Lanzarote Hurdle (2.40pm).
The well-regarded six-year-old finished second in novice company on his last start over hurdles, but fell on his chasing debut at Newbury in November.
He is going back over the smaller obstacles, with the ten-time champion trainer hoping to preserve his novice chasing status for next season.
“He was on the easy list for a spell after that and as he still lacks experience we've decided to switch him back to hurdles for the rest of the season before having another go over fences next winter,” Nicholls told his Betfair blog.
“The Lanzarote is a race I like to target and we've won it three times in the last ten years with Modus successful 12 months ago.
“Topofthegame is a giant of a horse with bags of talent and I am looking for a big run from him in this.”
Diese Des Bieffes landed two novice prizes in good style, before finding the smart If The Cap Fits too good when the pair met at Kempton on Boxing Day.
Bags Groove is seeking a hat-trick after wins at Aintree and Kempton, whilst Spiritofthegames won well on his last start at Lingfield.
The likes of William Henry, Coeur Blimey, River Frost and Le Patriote all have big chances in the race.
Elsewhere on Kempton’s seven-runner card Malcolm Jefferson’s star Waiting Patiently defends his unbeaten record against experienced performers God’s Own, Ballybolley, Smad Place and Josses Hill in the 32Red Casino Chase (2:05).
TIP: Topofthegame is a horse that Paul Nicholls really rates very highly and I think he is very well handicapped for this race. He is one to follow until next year’s Cheltenham Festival, and it will be interesting to see how he gets on in this. Top Ville Ben is a big each-way price. Fountain’s Windfall and Redicean are ones to look out for.
