Though there weren’t many Monday night fixtures to enjoy, Tranmere Rovers’ Connor Jennings at least made sure we were kept entertained.
The Super White Army marched on in the FA Cup after seeing off National League North side Southport to set up a meeting with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
The Sandgrounders hosted League Two side Tranmere after beating Boreham Wood 2-0 at the beginning of November.
Unfortunately for those making the journey to support the home side at Haig Avenue, this was the same scoreline they were defeated by on a dark Monday December night. Southport, to their credit, had the slight majority of possession and accumulated one more shot than the visitors (13 to 12) but Tranmere's progression was deserved after a simply stonking first half performance epitomised by Jennings' two excellent strikes.
Even before a quarter of an hour, Tranmere were one foot into the third round into the competition with a simply majestic volley from forward Jennings, worthy of anything we’ve seen of late in the top tier of the English game.
Jennings would go on to put Rovers further ahead two minutes before halftime, again with a volley, though not as aesthetically pleasing, after latching onto Jake Caprice’s cross.
Tranmere will now welcome third in the EPL Spurs on the first Friday of the New Year, and will certainly hope that Jennings’ traction engine foot will be well oiled ready to create a herculean upset.
You can watch the clip of Jennings' first goal, his virtuoso volley contender for goal of the month, below.
