The hallowed Anfield turn and the atmosphere that the home crowd generates there has been lauded over too many times to mention, including, most recently, by the legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, but it hasn’t seemed to impress some other North West football fans, namely the hosts of the Manchester Football Social on local radio station XS Manchester.
Commentator Danny Jackson, who is of the blue variety, fairly lets loose on the topic when it comes up on their “Legend’s Edition” show from last week.
“It’s an absolute myth Anfield as an atmosphere, what they do is they sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ - I’m going to have a rant now - they sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at the beginning, the Sky commentators stop to let them sing it without talking over them like it’s a national anthem.”
“It’s just embarrassing. So they sing for the first five minutes when they’re on top and then it’s like a church - unless they're on the front foot, creating chances. That game on Sunday [Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City] was different, other than the first fifteen we were comfortably in control of that game and the atmosphere died.”
Mr Jackson’s digression was surely well received on both sides of the divide in his native Manchester, with the age-old rivalry between United and Liverpool being added too in more recent years by a burgeoning one between the Reds and City, with some rip-roaring ties between them taking place over the last year alone.
