Monday Night Football is often compelling viewing, but Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville's autopsy of Manchester United's defeat to Brighton on Sunday was some serious stuff and it will have made for some uncomfortable viewing for Jose Mourinho.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher was scathing of United's performance at the Amex and particularly the defence.
"The first half was an absolute shambles defensively, it could be the worst kind of football defensively Mourinho has seen from one of his teams. Bailly had a nightmare and Victor Lindelof is not good enough to be a Man United player".
Gary Neville was equally critical and neither pundit could see Mourinho at the club this time next season, but were both also scathing of the United board for not giving Mourinho the tools.
In the much publicised failure to sign a centre-back during the transfer window, Mourinho had declared himself the head coach and not the manager in a side swipe at the club's head of recruitment Edward Woodward.
Summer targets Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld were deemed too expensive by Woodward, but both Carragher and Neville believed he should have backed Mourinho. "If it costs £120m then that's what it costs, give those players to the manager" claimed Neville, whilst Carragher was critical of United giving the Portuguese manager a contract extension last January if they weren't going to back him up in the transfer market "we know Mourinho likes players for today, not tomorrow".
The pair were also critical of United's second half display where they failed to exert any real pressure on Brighton despite dominating possession. Jose Mourinho has a week to work with his players, with their next game at home to Tottenham on Bank Holiday Monday at Old Trafford.
