Jamie Jones Takes Down Shaun Murphy In Crucible Classic

Jamie Jones rolled back the years today at the Crucible as he dumped former champion Shaun Murphy out of the World Championship … again.

Just as he did back in 2012, the tenacious Welshman sprung a surprise on the Magician and sent him home in the first round.

This time it went the full distance as Jones had to battle back from 8-5 behind before eventually sealing the match 10-9 to show once more that he’s got the bottle to do it on the big stage.

There hasn’t been a dull moment for Jones in his World Championship journey so far. His qualifying run saw him nearly lose from 9-0 up and then beat Liang Wenbo 10-0. Now he’s through to the main event, he’s not finished yet after coming through a dramatic opener to secure his place in the last 16.

It’s hard to have anything but praise for Jones and how he played in this one, but it does beg the question as to why he finds himself so lowly ranked down at world number 51. Not only did he keep in touch with Murphy in this one, he outplayed him in the safety department for long spells.

When he stormed to the quarter-finals here six years ago, he looked like a future ranking event winner and a top 16 player in the making, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way.

In this kind of form and with the battling qualities he has shown time and time again, there’s no doubt he’s one of the tour's great underachievers.

But with Kyren Wilson next on his hit list, the Crucible gives him the perfect platform to show just how good he really is again.
