Jimmy Robertson Reaches New Ground At German Masters

Jimmy Robertson may have spent most of his professional career quietly going about his business away from the glare of the spotlight – but that’s all changing this week at the German Masters.

He’s reached the quarter-finals of a ranking event for the first time in his nine-year career and it’s most certainly not before time.

The world number 37 – nicknamed J-Rob – is widely regarded as a very class act but has perhaps struggled more than most playing on the biggest stage in front of the TV cameras while often saving his best for the qualifying cubicles which have become his natural habitat.

He took centre stage at the Temopdrom in round one though on the main TV table against defending Anthony Hamilton and backed it up with a convincing 5-1 win. Last night he chalked up another win against Gary Wilson and is now through to the last eight for the first time and awaits a clash with Mark Williams this evening.

Robertson is arguably one of the most under-rated players on the snooker circuit. He is one of only 61 players to have made more than 100 professional century breaks and is probably most well-known for his heavy scoring ability.

He’s been knocking at the door for quite some while now having made it through to the last 32 of the UK Championship consecutively in his past two visits and has qualified for the World Championship for two of the last three years.

He has found a level of consistency which has seen him enjoy a fairly comfortable position in the rankings and has now set his sights on moving to the next level.

His run so far in Berlin will feel like a decent breakthrough and just reward for what a good player he is. The quarter-final line-up is developing into a strong one and Robertson will know he is one of the underdogs now surrounded by players with more experience at these latter stages of events.

But the German Masters has had a habit down the years of producing fairytale stories and Robertson may dare to dream that this could be his time.
