New Zealand jockey Aaron Kuru unearthed his inner Lone Ranger in the Maiden Steeplechase at Awapuni on Saturday, as having appeared to have fallen on board Des De Jeu, the Kiwi jockey managed to hold on to the reins as the horse slid across the turf, and as the horse got to his feet Kuru maintained his grip on the reins and duly got back on board the horse to continue the race.
However, more sensational scenes were to follow as having kept the partnership going, Kuru was able to get back into the race, and Des De Jeu went on to win the race in what is one of the most stunning performances of jockeyship ever seen on a racecourse.
Having jumped the last fence alongside favourite Gagarin, Des De Jeu found more in the run-in of the 3200m contest, and duly etched his name in racing history to grab victory from the jaws of defeat.
In the aftermath of Kuru's amazing ride he said: “I can’t explain it, it just happened and I got back on,” Kuru said. “The horse has got a lot of ability.”
Now, with Royal Ascot just around the corner racing eyes will veer to the Flat, but even the most ardent Flat fan can only admire Kuru's heroics in the saddle, and he will now become a well-known figure around the racing world after what is a majestic piece of agility and skill.
