The arrival of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in Turin was a momentous day for Juventus and their fans and may herald a new era for a club that’s clamouring to separate itself permanently from the Italian domestic game and into the ranks of the global super-elite.
The €105M deal to bring the 33-year-old to Serie A has been greeted with much fanfare on the peninsula and crowds mobbed the club’s J-Medical centre as he arrived to undertake a medical ahead of his official unveiling as Juventus player.
Ronaldo, who will earn a reported €26.5m per annum as a player with the Bianconeri, was cheered boisterously by fans as he arrived with many chanting "Ronaldo, bring us the Champions League" or, simply, his name.
But an element of the support there choose to belt out a rather more sinister number, aimed at their Neapolitan rivals.
The words “Vesuvius, wash them with fire” were heard being roared by groups behind the barricades - a violent reference to the active volcano that overlooks Naples.
Back in 2013, Juve were ordered to play a game with one stand entirely empty after fans had been found guilty of “territorial discrimination” against Naples after fans sung similar chants to the ones which arose once more this afternoon.
The club could face punishment once more as a small minority of fans have chosen to dampen the joyous mood that’s surrounded the Old Lady since the news of this massive transfer story broke.
