As the Tottenham Hotspur faithful were sent into a state of euphoria at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, having completed the league double over Manchester City, the formidable Harry Kane and Son Heung-min equalled a record set by Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard for the most goal combinations in the Premier League.
Storm Eunice may have held off for this clash but hurri-KANE delivered a storm of his own as his individual masterclass blew the title race open.
Spurs’ dynamic duo have now linked-up 36 times in the top-flight and it is an incredible feat considering the amazing players they have equalled with this sublime stat. Everyone remembers the chemistry between the Chelsea pair who set this record all those years ago. They both knew one another’s game inside and out and it was as if they were telepathic, or shared a hive mind as they just knew what the other was about to do.
Opposition defenders and goalkeepers could do nothing but watch as two icons of the Premier League dismantled them with precision and skill. It was the general consensus that no duo would ever be able to match Drogba and Lampard's record, but with the way that Kane and Son have linked up over the years, it seemed only a matter of time until they caught up with the trailblazers - and now they’re all set to eclipse the Blues boys.
It is just another example of how fruitful Kane and Son’s on-field relationship has been over the last six years and why they will go down as one of the greatest attacking duos the league has ever seen. It was only last season that they set the record for most direct link-ups in a single season with 14. Things may have ended sour under Jose Mourinho but there is no doubting he got the very best out of Kane and Son as the centre-forward scooped up last year’s Golden Boot and Playmaker of the Season awards.
Kane’s display in the north west on Saturday was a flashback to his peak in 2020-21 as he scored twice and played a key role in his side’s opening goal with a sublime pass that set Son away, catching out Ruben Dias before the South Korean teed up Dejan Kulusevski to open up his Spurs account. The England captain’s performance was majestic. He was unplayable and everything he tried came off, whether that be finish or pass. It was so fitting that his best display of the season came against the side who wanted to sign him in the summer and Pep Guardiola made that clear after the game, knowing that those are the type of performances you are going to get from the fantastic forward.
The goal that equalled the record was a thing of beauty, it involved lovely build-up between Son and Ryan Sessegnon before the attacker got the ball back and, with an inch-perfect ball, found Kane in between the two City defenders and there was no chance the Three Lions star was going to miss from there.
Antonio Conte’s side had fully merited their win with that performance and the Italian will be more than aware that he has two of the best attacking players in football at his disposal in the two attackers. With both of them in what is widely-described as the prime years of their careers (Kane 28, Son 29), they still have much more magnificence to deliver and Conte will be hoping that it will continue at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
With Kane turning in one of the best 90 minutes of football to ever grace the Premier League, we saw him with a beaming smile, something that has largely been lacking from the Spurs striker’s face for much of the campaign since his summer transfer saga. Like the supporters, he is delighted that Conte is at the helm to help rejuvenate the team and have them back in a position to compete for titles. Mauricio Pochettino got them the closest they had been in a long time, but even he fell short. However, when it comes to a proven track record of silverware, Conte outshines the Argentine and Spurs pulled a rabbit out of a hat to bring him to north London.
The Italian’s success is well known as a result of serious financial backing and he will undoubtedly look to build a squad at Spurs to match the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. He knows he has two very valuable assets in Kane and Son and he said that he wants the England star to stay as the ‘star’ of his project.
There appears to be a much better chance of Kane committing his future at Spurs than there was seven months ago, but chairman Daniel Levy will have to match his and Conte’s ambitions with financial investment in the next few transfer windows.
His potent attacking partner is already tied down in N17 until 2025 and everyone associated with the club would love to see Kane sign a new deal so that their prolific partnership on the field continues and helps them kick-start a new era that will help bear the fruits of success.
