Kangaroo Stopped Play ... When Animals Stage Pitch Invasions

Kangaroo Stopped Play ... When Animals Stage Pitch Invasions

This looks like a woof call from the ref ... surely the dog was going for the ball?

Either way, this pooch's unexpected tackle left a footballer on his backside. Was it Emile Husky? Or could it have been John Terrier? And was the game played at Kennelworth Road?

Every time a dog stages its own pitch invasion it invariably draws a cheer from the crowd. In the 1960s and 70s stray dogs wandering onto the playing area was a common sight. There are countless clips of dogs being chased off the pitch by referees or stewards or even picked up by players and carried back to the touchline for their own protection. These days, enhanced stadium security makes such intrusions a rare - and as a result - a strangely joyous thing.

But it's not just dogs that stage these incursions. This summer a women's football match in Australia was held up after a kangaroo leapt onto the pitch and was eventually herded off by a truck.

Even the all powerful Premier League can't prevent unwelcome guests. Who can forget the Anfield cat which started nosing round the hallowed turf during a game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in 2012?

A sneaky squirrel took a shine to Highbury in 2009 during a game between Arsenal and Villareal to the clear amusement of the supporters.

A cricket match between Nottinghamshire and Somerset was interrupted by a deer a couple of summers ago while in 2011, a fox had a sniff around Twickenham before England played Scotland.
