Kevin Na Nails Backwards Flop Shot In Open Practice

Kevin Na Nails Backwards Flop Shot In Open Practice
08:10, 19 Jul 2018

Kevin Na will kick off his quest for Open Championship glory at Carnoustie this morning, but before the American hits his first ball in the 2018 event he has been showing off his silky skills with a club in his hand.

Links courses are well known for their harrowing bunkers, which can often make professional players look like amateurs as they look to get their ball out of some steep sand traps.  However, Na showed some fine trickery when showing the world how to get a ball on the green that is teetering on the edge of a bunker.

The 34-year-old placed his ball on the edge of the bunker, but instead of playing forward he elected to stand inside the bunker and whip the club through rapidly in what could be called a backwards flop shot before watching the ball sail over his head and on to the green.

We have seen players use stone walls to their advantage down the years in Open Championships, as they look to manufacture their way through some sticky situations on tough links courses to get the ball on the green, but Na has shown an innovative way to utilise the steep bunkers to his advantage, and who knows someone could face a similar shot to play during the next four days at the Scottish venue.

Kevin Na tees off at 9:25am this morning, where he will be playing with 2001 Open Champion David Duval and Scotland's Scott Jamieson, so we can see if Na elects to emulate that backwards flop shot.
