La Liga Players Express Anger At Plans To Take Games To America

News today that La Liga were planning to take a game abroad met with a decidedly mixed reaction from fans on social media.

While some saw the move as a logical way of promoting the brand on the global stage, others argued it was a smack in the face for the loyal fans who go to games week-in, week out.

Here in the UK, NFL fans have lapped up the games coming over to these shores and a few years ago the Premier League toyed with the idea of taking games abroad. It could potentially be the first time that a competitive European league match is taken away from its home.

But crucially, the La Liga players have reacted angrily to the plans and have issued a strongly worded statement in opposition to the proposals.

Tonight, the AFE which represents the La Liga players issued a strongly worded statement, saying: "The AFE strongly objects.

"As per usual, LaLiga has dispensed with the opinions of the players and has undertaken actions that only benefit them, regardless of the health or risks to the players, and even less the feelings of the following masses of the clubs who are being "forced" to compete in North America once a season.

"Faced with such manifest arbitrariness, David Aganzo, president of the Spanish Footballers Association (AFE), has made his complaint public and points out that footballers are not currency that can be used in business to only benefit third parties. United we are stronger."

Taking sports matches abroad is expected to become a regular thing in future years. For example, the Australian rugby league - the NRL - is reportedly keen on taking a game to California next year. Earlier this season, Super League clubs Hull FC and Wigan played in Sydney.
