World number one Mark Selby was left stunned as he lost in the first round of the World Open to world number 69 Lee Walker.
The 41-year old Welshman masterminded an impressive 5-2 win over the reigning world champion in what is the first event of the season in which he has qualified.
Under the bright lights of the TV table – conditions far more familiar to Selby – Walker produced a gutsy display with five breaks over 50 to see him to the victory post.
This win will without doubt be one of the biggest of his career and should provide a timely morale boost for Walker who until now has lost in the qualifying round of all four ranking events staged so far this season.
Now he will be hoping he can kick on and rekindle some of the form he displayed at the back end of last season where he got within two frames of qualifying for The Crucible, reached the last 32 of the Gibraltar Open and the last 16 of the Welsh Open.
He has beaten world number one @markjesterselby 5-2 at the World Open
In these runs, he chalked up wins against established professionals including the likes of Neil Robertson, Graeme Dott, Jimmy Roberston and Matthew Stevens.
For Selby, he has yet to really get going so far in this campaign having reached the last 16 in just one event so far albeit he has been recovering from an early-season injury.
More shocks
Selby was not the only seed to suffer a surprise defeat in Yushan today.
Shaun Murphy was defeated to Daniel Wells, Mark King lost out to Chen Zhe and Liang Wenbo was on the wrong end of a contest which went the distance against fellow countryman Li Hang.
