Leeds United have enjoyed a flying start to the season under new manager Marcelo Bielsa who has yet to suffer a Championship defeat since taking charge of the club in the summer.
In fact, the only loss the iconic Argentine boss has suffered was a 2-0 defeat to Alex Neil’s Preston in the League Cup, something him and his troops avenged on Tuesday night when the Whites comprehensively beat the Lilywhites 3-0 at Elland Road thanks to a brace from Tyler Roberts and a Liam Cooper header.
The result extended Leeds’ lead at the summit of the table to three points over 2nd-placed Brentford, with the club now accumulating 18 points from their opening eight matches.
The win was fully deserved, and it has subsequently caught the attention of one of France’s 2018 World Cup winners, Benjamin Mendy, who tweeted his approval:
“Marcelo Bielsa (followed by three straight claps)”
Twitter user and Leeds fan @NiallBranton responded with:
“I’d have you at Leeds but Barry Douglas has been very good”
To which Mendy replied:
“Ahaha ok give me a call if needed bro (crying/laughing face)”
Supporters were loving the exchange with the Man City defender who had prioritised watching the match ahead of the Champions League games that were going on at the same time, although while a move for the Frenchman is out of the question - especially with Barry Douglas in such fine form! - Leeds fans will be hoping their club comes up against Mendy’s side in the Premier League next season.
Leeds were last in the top-flight way back in 2003/04, but confidence is growing by the game that this season could prove to be a special one under Bielsa.
