Despite failing to win this weekend against a stubborn Nottingham Forest side, Leeds United have returned to the top of the market to win the Championship come May. A controversial handball goal from Kemar Roofe in the latter stages of that game earned them a point at Elland Road but a decent performance has seen the bookies cut their odds significantly, to the point where they are now 4/1 favourites for the league title.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men have been cut from 6/1 to 4/1 over the past few days putting the Yorkshire club ahead of West Brom and Middlesbrough in the betting. West Brom are now second favourites at 9/2 whilst Middlesbrough are 11/2. Current league leaders Sheffield United are also 9/2 to fight off their challengers.
However, there are a number of longer priced challengers that may interest a few punters. Frank Lampard’s Derby County, who are playing some lovely football, can be backed at 10/1 whilst the in-form team in the Championship, Norwich, have come crashing in, from 33/1 to 12/1 to win the league. Carrow Road saw yet another victory this week as they cruised past Brentford in a 1-0 win.
Further down the market, big guns Aston Villa and Swansea can be backed at a huge 40/1 with both clubs having recent Premier League experience and big wage budgets. Under new boss Dean Smith, Villa are still finding their feet but will have to discover some form if they are to get back in amongst it.
But at the moment it is Bielsa’s Leeds who are leading the way with the bookies, who are just two points off the lead.
