Wakefield Trinity winger Lewis Murphy is excited for the 2023 Betfred Super League season to get underway after an impressive individual campaign last year.
The 20-year-old scored an impressive 17 tries in 2022 in his breakout year with Wakefield, playing an instrumental role in the club maintaining their Betfred Super League status. He is a player tipped for a huge future in rugby league but for now he is just waiting to get back out on the pitch for the new campaign.
He told The Sportsman: “I just love playing the game, I just miss it a lot. When you’re not playing you realise how much you actually enjoy playing, so I’m looking forward to it.”

With last season having a lot of negatives from a Wakefield perspective, Murphy says that the current mood in camp is positive and that all the players and staff are sharing information with one another.
“It’s a good vibe, everyone’s trying to learn from each other and it feels good. [We’re] looking forward to the season and just working on everything in training. I think everyone’s really gelled and getting used to training and enjoying it.”
The youngster shared that he enjoys working with new Wakefield boss Mark Applegarth after working closely with him during his days in the youth setup. Applegarth was appointed as first team boss in September having succeeded Willie Poching, with whom he served as assistant, along with his duties as reserve coach and head of youth.
The boss is a boyhood Wakefield Trinity fan so a successful year on the field means just as much to him as the supporters, and Murphy feels that his step-up to the big job has been going well so far.
He added: “I’ve worked with Mark before in the academy and I see how he is working and he’s definitely doing well.”
Wakefield Trinity get their 2023 Betfred Super League campaign underway with a home clash against Catalans Dragons on Friday 17 February with a kick-off time of 7:30pm.
