Ligue 1 Gameweek 12 Review: PSG And Monaco Score Goals For Fun

PSG hit five

A volley from Kylian Mbappe put Paris Saint-Germain in front at the Stade Raymond Kopa, as the away side beat Angers 5-0. Julian Draxler dinked the ball over Angers keeper Mathieu Michel for PSG’s second inside the opening quarter of an hour, with Dani Alves providing his second assist of the game.

Edinson Cavani scored his 100th goal for the club with a powerful strike in the 30th minute, then raced away to get another on the hour mark. Mbappe also grabbed a brace when he rounded Michel and a sliding Romain Thomas couldn’t prevent the ball going over the line.

But Monaco get six

Argentine striker Guido Carrillo started and finished the scoring as Monaco put six past Guingamp. The 26-year-old headed in his first goal of the season from a cross off Almamy Toure.

The right-back then battled his way through to pull the ball back for a simple finish for Adama Traore. Keita added the third and then Fabinho made it four from the penalty spot in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Traore got his second after a good team move with yet another assist from Toure, but Guingamp goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson should have held his shot. Another header from Carrillo gave Leonardo Jardim’s side the 6-0 victory, with both Radamel Falcao and Thomas Lemar missing through injury.

Forget about Evra

Marseille won their third consecutive Ligue One match, at the end of a controversial week for the club. Patrice Evra was suspended by The Olmpians after he kicked a fan in the face against Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Europa League on Thursday.

The supporters held a sign up at the Stade Velodrome which read: ‘You thought you were bigger than the club and fans. We don’t want you in our colours. F**k off Evra.’

Rudi Garcia’s men opened the scoring through Luiz Gustavo just before half-time, but four second half goals meant it was a comfortable result in the end. Florian Thauvin finished after Kostas Mitroglou completely missed the ball, with the former Newcastle winger celebrating by borrowing a camera from the TV crew to film his teammates.

Morgan Sanson and Mitroglou netted before Thauvin grabbed his second of the match. Caen had previously only conceded eight goals in 11 games and have one of the best defences in the division.

Bielsa has lift off

Lille won only their second game of the season, as they beat bottom side Metz 3-0. Marcelo Bielsa’s team hadn’t won since the opening day of the season, whilst new Metz coach Frederic Hantz now knows the size of his extremely difficult task.

Nicolas Pepe scored twice which were his first goals for the club since he signed from Angers in the summer. It was Lille's first win in ten league games, ending their longest winless streak since the start of the 2003-04 campaign.

Derby drama once again

The Derby Rhone-Alpes at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard started in the traditional manner with the Carmina Burana song welcoming the players. It may have been Bonfire night, but it was still a surprise to see the game halted after only 30 seconds due to smoke from flares and the game eventually resumed almost seven minutes later.

Saint-Etienne attacker Romain Hamouma missed a golden opportunity only two minutes after the restart, but the resulting corner from Anthony Lopes’ save saw Lyon counter-attack and Memphis Depay finish the move to give his side the lead.

Nabil Fekir scored the second on the break again, but the game ended as a contest just after half-time when Leo Lacroix was sent off for a dangerous challenge on the 24-year-old. Mariano, Bertrand Traore and Fekir made it 5-0, but the Lyon captain removed his shirt and held it up to the home fans.

The Saint-Etienne contingent behind the goal naturally took offence to the demonstration and riot police quickly had to form a wall, as the game was suspended. A delay of 35 minutes ensured before the match was abandoned, with the result now in doubt.

Honourable mentions

Rennes are now up to 10th after their third consecutive victory in the league, as they beat Bordeaux after a Jeremy Toulalan own goal. It was also their third consecutive 1-0 scoreline in Ligue 1, whilst they had won only one of their first nine matches.
