Last season, the Dons and the Cougars met in the Betfred League 1 play-off eliminator final, with the winner going on to play for the chance of promotion. After 80 minutes and a last minute try from Doncaster’s Liam Johnson, Jake Sweeting had the perfect chance to seal victory in what would go down in history as one of the most climatic games that the Northern Hemisphere of rugby has seen.
Now Keighley return to their home turf for their second game of the season, hosting the team that crushed their promotion hopes last season, with redemption on their mind.
The Cougars have found themselves flying out of the blocks with a huge 32-6 win over Oldham, with Alix Stephenson, Aaron Levy, Lewis Young and Nathan Roebuck all finding their way over the line in a huge opening day.
Doncaster also got themselves plenty of points on the board in their first game of the season. A 48-20 win over the recently rebranded Midlands Hurricanes (formerly Coventry Bears) puts them ironically just two points ahead of Keighley on points difference, with the Dons on 28 and the Cougars on 26, like last season’s scoreline.
