Roberto Firmino is winning the race to fit for this weekend's Merseyside derby according to Jurgen Klopp.

Firmino had to go off with an ankle injury during Liverpool's 0-0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford last Sunday and missed the midweek demolition of Watford.

But Klopp remains hopeful that he will be back to face Everton at Goodison Park. He told a press conference today: "Bobby was outside running. We will see how he reacts. He's very positive - that's Bobby's nature. It looks really good.”

“I don’t see any other player being in contention after the problem he had. It looks really good but I don't know if he will be ready”.

Klopp also took time to praise Joel Matip after a string of impressive performances in recent weeks. He is expected to join Virgil van Dijk in defence against Everton.

The German boss said: "He is a really high-class player. He is doing the job and not asking for any credit or whatever, he is just there, he loves what he is doing. It’s really nice to have him around. We had a couple of different centre-half couples and they all worked, that’s the best news.

"The problem in the centre-half situation we had this year, I never had in my life. But Matip played fantastically the other night.”

Liverpool are a point ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League title race and though Everton will be in no mood to give their neighbours any help, they cross Stanley park as firm favourites to pick up three points.
