Liverpool’s record signing has come out in support of his fellow centre-back Dejan Lovren after the Croat hit the headlines this week following his spat with Sergio Ramos. Lovren filmed a controversial Instagram video after Croatia’s 3-2 win over Spain and called out the Real Madrid defender saying: “'Haha! 3-2! Go ahead and talk now buddy. Buddy! They are a bunch of p*ssies.”
This argument between the two centre-backs has been mainly one-way, ever since Lovren called himself one of the best defenders in the world during the World Cup and criticised the Real Madrid captain. He then went onto say he thought Raphael Varane made Ramos look better.
Now his Liverpool teammate Virgil Van Dijk has spoken about Sergio Ramos in an interview with De Telegraaf and he agrees with Lovren:
“He is a great player and I respect what he has achieved but he is not the best, he is not my type of central defender.
“Ramos' team-mate at Real Madrid, Raphael Varane is my favourite. He is an excellent defender and has already won a lot.”
He also spoke about the Champions League final, when Sergio Ramos lifted his third consecutive title after a controversial tangle with Mo Salah early on.
“I do not know if it was deliberate but mentally something changed when Salah came off,” the Dutch defender commented.
“Suddenly, Marcelo, [Karim] Benzema and [Cristiano] Ronaldo all appeared at Trent and released the entire right side. With Salah they never dared to do that.
“The match could have been different. I sometimes think about the match but I hope to be in the final again and on the right side of the score.”
