Liverpool appear to have put all their eggs in one basket after agreeing a £66.8m deal with Roma for the services of top goalkeeper Alisson Becker. This brings their total summer spending to a whopping £170m and will complete Jurgen Klopp’s major transfer business this summer as the club must comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
This means their hopes of signing Lyon star Nabil Fekir seem to have evaporated with Klopp prioritising a world-class goalkeeper over another attacking option in his side. Liverpool have made no contact with Lyon over the transfer of Fekir for almost a month now and the deal seems to be dead in the water.
Having instead brought in Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke for the much smaller sum of £12m, Klopp now has a wealth of attacking and creative options at his disposal including last season’s Premier League golden boot winner Mo Salah. Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain will miss the majority of the season after suffering a knee injury against Roma last season but the squad depth should see Liverpool through.
Instead of adding to his squad, the German boss will now look to trim and hone his side and lose some of the fringe players. With Alisson coming in, it is thought one of Loris Karius, Simon Mignolet or Danny Ward will leave whilst a few youngsters will also depart the club on loan.
Liverpool fans will be hopeful of competing for the title after this summer of spending but they will have to do so without one of the most talked about players of this window, Nabil Fekir.
