Liverpool went into their crunch clash against Chelsea in April 2014 knowing that a win would extend their lead at the top of the table to five points, and in turn bring the club to within touching distance of that first elusive Premier League title.
Everyone knows the story by now.
Club legend Steven Gerrard agonisingly slipped just inside his own-half, allowing Demba Ba to race through on goal and put Chelsea 1-0 up in first-half injury time, Willian then confirmed the Blues win. Title rivals Man City won their game in hand and went on to bag the title, much to the despair of Gerrard and the red-half of Merseyside.
Gerrard has now opened up about that infamous 'slip' in a candid interview with the Daily Mail’s Dominic King ahead of the release of the Amazon biopic ‘Make Us Dream’, a documentary about the player’s remarkable career, which can be viewed in cinemas on Thursday.
“What happened was just pure bad luck but, when you do a book or film, especially with people who have won Oscars and made films such as Amy Winehouse and Senna, you must be as honest and open as you can,” said the now Rangers manager.
“Looking back, I didn't hide it well, did I?
“But that's me. You could see the pure ecstasy when I was at the top end of the dream
.“But the low moments? I'm not one who could put on the poker face. I never have been.”
Four years later and Liverpool are yet to realise that title-winning dream, although Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently unbeaten after 12 matches, and two points behind leaders and defending champions City at November's international break.
Meanwhile, Gerrard’s Rangers are 3rd in the Scottish Premier League, two points behind Hearts and Celtic, but with a game in hand over the former.
