Manchester City Have The Ammunition To Target Arsenal's Premier League Record Of Scoring In Consecutive Games

Manchester City breezed past Arsenal with aplomb at the weekend, as the reigning Premier League champions beat the Gunners 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to kick off their campaign on a winning note.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva saw Pep Guardiola's kick off the new season like they ended last season's title-winning campaign with a win, but could this year's City squad be even better than last year's one, who stormed to the title and amassed 100 points along the way.

City's centurions last season were on a different level to their counterparts last season, and while a stronger Liverpool are likely to get closer to their north west rivals this season, Guardiola's summer addition of Riyad Mahrez, and the bonus of the now-fit Benjamin Mendy at the problem left-back position means that City's squad has strength depth across the board.

So, could the City team surpass last year's heroics, and if they are to retain the Premier League crown then they will most likely smash in a gargantuan amount of goals like last season.

Guardiola's men scored in 36 of their 38 Premier League matches last season, and amassed an astonishing 106 goals, but they drew a blank in two games with 0-0 draws against Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town, so the Citizens will be looking to build on that record this year, and Sunday's result suggests that they have the firepower to score in every single league game.

Arsenal hold the current Premier League record for the most consecutive games scored in as between May 2001 and November 2002 the Gunners hit the back of the net in 55 consecutive top-flight games, so City will have a long way to go to surpass that sensational record.

Second to Arsenal in the record books is Manchester United, who scored in 36 games between December 2007 and November 2008, while Liverpool feature twice alongside Chelsea and Aston Villa in the top-seven.  Guardiola's City also feature and scored in 25 consecutive Premier League games between April 2017 and December 2017, so this current crop of players at Etihad have shown that they can string together a whole host of games in which they score, but City can eclipse that record with aplomb this year.

Sergio Aguero topped the City goal-scoring charts with 21 goals in the Premier League last season, while Raheem Sterling (18), Gabriel Jesus (13) and Leroy Sane (10) were the only others to make it into double-figures, but they had 13 different goalscorers last season in the league with the likes of David Silva (9), Kevin De Bruyne (8) and Bernardo Silva (6) adding a significant number to the list.

With the addition of Mahrez, who netted 12 times for Leicester in the league last season, and with Bernardo Silva sparkling in the weekend win over Arsenal then he could be seen gaining a lot more game time this year, and he could prove to be one of the stars of this season, and this could all culminate with City scything through defences with ease all season, and while many will initially focus on their chances of emulating Arsenal's 'Invincibles' by going through the season without a league defeat, it's potentially Manchester City's year to score in every Premier League game, and challenge the Gunners for that fine record.
