The BT Sport pundits have been rounding up the calendar year with a Premier League team of the year, based upon who has been the best performing players over the past 12 months. In that time, Manchester City raced to a whopping 100 point total and scooped the Premier League title however Liverpool have had an incredible unbeaten start to this season which makes this team difficult to choose.
Pundits Robbie Savage, Chris Sutton, John Hartson and Jermaine Jenas debated the XI which was hosted by presenter Mark Pougatch and there was some controversy in the eleven. In goal, it was unanimously decided that Ederson was the best keeper of the year but then the controversy started.
Kyle Walker was selected at right-back with Virgil Van Dijk alongside him at centre-back. Aymeric Laporte edged the other central sport whilst Andy Robertson at left-back completed an all City/Liverpool back line.
In midfield, the same sort of theme continued with Pep Guardiola’s men dominant. Fernandinho was the man selected in defensive midfield such is his importance to City and he was unsurprisingly picked alongside Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva at first before the panel moved onto the forwards.
Mo Salah was an easy pick after his exceptional season and he was chosen up front with Harry Kane. Then the debate was sparked on the left-hand side as Raheem Sterling was picked by the majority of the panel meaning Chelsea’s Eden Hazard missed out!
It was then decided that Kevin De Bruyne was somehow the weak link in the team and the panel were asked whether they would replace one Belgian with another. Amazingly they said yes!
