According to the Sun, John Stones will sign a new mega-contract with Manchester City that will see him earn £170,000 a week, a £50k increase on his current contract. Stones has been vital to Manchester City’s success over the past season and his performance for England at the World Cup also convinced City chiefs to tie him down for years to come.

The 24-year-old looks like he is fulfilling the potential he showed at Barnsley and Everton, before he made his £50m move to Manchester two years ago. That move was heavily criticised by some pundits who could not see the value in signing such a young defender for Pep Guardiola.

However, as with most things, Pep has been proven right and now John Stones is one of the finest ball-playing centre-halves in the top flight. In the Amazon Prime documentary ‘All or Nothing’ it was clear to see how much faith the Spanish boss puts in his young defender and his progress under the best manager in the world.

Although Stones’ current deal does not run out until 2022, a new contract is being rewarded to the defender to keep him happy at the club. Man City now feel they have secured a bargain and Stones could be an important part of their side for the next decade.

Gareth Southgate will be hoping he continues to get the playing time he needs to develop as he could be a future England captain if he continues his impressive upward curve.
