Manchester United Confirm Lisandro Martinez Signing

The 24-year-old joins from Ajax, subject to personal terms being agreed

Manchester United have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of central defender Lisandro Martinez. The Argentina international will join upon agreement over personal terms according to the club’s official website. These negotiations are not expected to be a stumbling block, with the player reportedly making clear his desire to head to Old Trafford rather than join fellow suitors Arsenal.

The 24-year-old becomes the Red Devils’ third official signing of the summer transfer window. He will join Feyenoord left back Tyrell Malacia and free agent Christian Eriksen, previously of Brentford, as part of new manager Erik ten Hag’s summer rebuild.

Like Malacia and Eriksen before him, Martinez is a known quantity to his new coach. While Malacia had played against Ten Hag’s Ajax side and Eriksen had trained with them, Martinez is the first member of the side that won last season’s Eredivisie to follow his former manager to England.

It is believed that Martinez and Eriksen will not join the United squad on their current pre-season tour and will instead hook up with the side upon their return. Attention now turns to whether the club can convince Frenkie de Jong to join. An €85 million fee was agreed with Barcelona last week, but the midfielder is still waiting for resolution on an unpaid sum of £17 million in deferred wages.
