Everton are ready to swoop in for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on a free transfer as his contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season. The Toffees are keen to take advantage of the contract dilemma Smalling finds himself in, with the 28-year-old unsure of his future at the Manchester United, given the criticism of his performances in recent months.
United have been linked with a whole host of central defenders in recent months with Mourinho keen to remedy United’s shaky back line, who have only managed to keep one clean sheet this season in the Premier League.
The Sun now report that Smalling could move from Manchester to Merseyside bringing an end to his nine-year spell at Old Trafford. United do have the option to keep hold of Smalling for another year but his wages of £90k a week could mean it makes more financial sense for United to get rid of him as soon as possible.
Marco Silva remains keen on the former England international and wants to make an offer for him in the January transfer window. Smalling has played a fair part in United’s campaign this season, making 14 appearances for Mourinho’s men. He played the full 90 against Man City last week but United fans still would like to see players brought in at the centre of defence.
Everton currently have Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate and Kurt Zouma as central defenders along with Phil Jagielka. Zouma’s loan is coming to an end at the end of the season and Phil Jagielka is coming to the end of his career, reinforcements are needed at Goodison.
