Phil Jones has struggled to cement his place in the heart of Manchester United's defence under Jose Mourinho and the England international did himself no favours on Wednesday as he produced a calamitous error to score a comical own goal and gift Valencia a 2-0 lead in their Group H clash.
Chasing back towards his own goal in the first few minutes of the second half, Jones was trying to fend off Valencia striker Michy Batshuayi, but while he tried to out-muscle the forward on loan for Chelsea he found himself producing one of the worst moments in a United shirt.
As United goalkeeper Sergio Romero raced out of his goal to try and gather the ball, Jones was forced to the ground by a little pressure from Batshuayi and found himself sliding towards the ball, and instead of trying to deflect the ball out for a throw in or a corner, Jones unwittingly pushed the ball past the on-rushing Romero and had to watch the ball trickle into the Red Devils net.
Having conceded the shocking own goal to double Valencia's lead, Jones just turned away from his own net and trundled disconsolately for the restart.
United had headed into the match having already qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League, but Jose Mourinho would've wanted to finish the qualifying group on a positive note, but having trailed at the break to a Carlos Soler goal it was made worse by Jones' dismal own goal and United look set to finish second in the group to Juventus.
Watch Phil Jones make a harrowing effort of trying to clear the ball and inadvertently scored an own goal:
