Manchester United face a tough battle with several of Europe’s top clubs after big news has emerged from Bayern Munich. Bild report that German World Cup winner Mats Hummels is growing frustrated at the lack of playing time he is getting at the Allianz this season.
With Jerome Boateng, Niklas Sule and Javi Martinez all being rotated along with Hummels, the big German could look for a move away in order to increase his playing time and establish himself as one of the top defenders in the world.
Manchester United would be keen to reignite their long-standing interest in the German international after their dismal start to the Premier League season. It is apparent for everyone to see that United’s defence is their weak point, with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof all failing to assert themselves as first-class centre-halves.
Jose Mourinho may not last much longer at the helm but targeting a top class defender is top of the Red Devils’ transfer list and if they can take advantage of a wantaway situation then that would be ideal.
Juventus are also thought to be interested in Hummels, aware that their back line of Chiellini, Bonucci and Barzagli are all reaching the end of their careers. United, having chased the likes of Harry Maguire in the summer, will be hoping to land a big name centre-back in January, as they look to arrest the downward spiral they find themselves on.
This would be a huge signing if any club can prize Hummels away from Bayern Munich.
