Atlanta United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for the Guinean centre-half Florentin Pogba.
Pogba, 28, is an experienced defender whose most recent spell was with the Turkish outfit Genclerbirligi. He was reported to be close to a deal with the Spanish side Elche recently but that now looks to be in the pan at the player’s behest.
The older brother of the Manchester United defender Paul, Pogba is reported to be set to sign for the MLS champions Atlanta according to the French publication L’Equipe.
Atlanta United were newly formed as an MLS expansion team back in 2014 and played their first season in 2017.
Gerardo “Tata” Martino, of ex-Barcelona fame, was the club’s first ever coach and guided them to the play-offs in their first season of competition and all the way to lifting the MLS Cup in their second one last season.
The ex-Ajax manager Frank de Boer is set to take the reins for the upcoming season after the Argentine departed.
Club president Darren Eales said of his appointment: “In addition to meeting our club’s core values, Frank’s philosophical views for how to play unequivocally aligns with ours.
“He also has a proven track record of developing youth players, with many of them going on to star for top European teams.”
De Boer won four league titles on the spin with the dutch giants but followed that up with two dire stints and Inter Milan and Crystal Palace, each of which ended very quickly indeed.
