Manchester United Target Matthijs de Ligt Give Brilliant Answer To The Lionel Messi v Cristiano Ronaldo Debate
09:24, 18 Dec 2018

The debate on who is better, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo has been raging for over a decade now and yet every week people seem to change their mind on social media. They are of course the two best players of their generation and it is interesting to hear insight from players who have played with or against both of them.

One of those defenders is Golden Boy winner of 2018, Matthijs de Ligt, who is now one of the hottest young players in world football. At just 19 years of age, he is already a key member of his club and country’s back line and looks to have an incredible future ahead of him. He will be part of an Ajax team who will look to cause an upset in the Champions League round of 16 as they travel to the Santiago Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid, a ground where Ronaldo used to rule the roost.

Of course, he won’t be coming up against him this time around after his mega-money move to Juventus in the summer but he will still face a challenge against the likes of Gareth Bale. The Dutch international was asked by Sky Sport Italia if he would rather play with Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi and his response was this:

“Ronaldo or Messi? I’d prefer to play with Ziyech at Ajax..”

He is referring of course to his club teammate Hakim Ziyech, the Moroccon 25-year-old playmaker who has bags of natural talent and skill. He is boasting a goal record this year which is on Ronaldo and Messi’s level, having hit a remarkable ten goals in 13 Eredivisie matches this season from an attacking midfield role.

This season’s Champions League could be the perfect chance for these Ajax youngsters to shine and ruffle a few feathers amongst Europe’s big boys.
