Luke Shaw is to sign a new five-year deal at Manchester United, completing a remarkable change in fortunes for the defender who has been publically criticised in the past by boss Jose Mourinho.
His new deal is believed to be worth more than £150,000 a week and is a reward for an impressive start to the season which has surprised many.
The 23-year-old now finds himself a regular starter at Old Trafford ahead of Ashley Young and is apparently pleased to be viewed as a player whose long-term future is so valued by Mourinho. His contract was expected to be allowed to expire, making him a free agent next summer but United have safeguarded Shaw's future with an attractive new deal.
The deal is especially surprising given that Mourinho has been critical of Shaw's attitude and fitness of the past and spent much of the summer tracking Juventus left-back Alex Sandro.
Shaw cost United £27million in 2014, a signing by former boss Louis van Gaal from Southampton. He was seen as a potential successor for Patrice Evra and the fee made hin the most expensive teenager in the world for a time. But Shaw suffered a double leg fracture a year later and his progress was cruelly halted.
He did not feature in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the World Cup in Russia but he is firmly back on the international radar after his impressive form. A deal like this suggests United are keen on locking down several more of their players who will become free agents next year.
