Marseille Turn Down Chance To Sign Tottenham Hotspur Forward Amid Interest From West Ham

Though the bid from West Ham for Tottenham Hotspur’s want-away striker Fernando Llorente wasn’t as forthcoming as widely expected before deadline day last week, in yet another indication that the striker is trying to engineer a move and break free from his Spurs’ shackles, Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille have reportedly refused the opportunity to sign Llorente this week.

Since the Spaniard’s move from Swansea City last summer- a major catalyst among Swans fans for their descent into the Championship- Llorente has failed to impose himself at the North London club.

The 33 year-old has scored just five goals since his move from the Liberty Stadium for £12million.

Though teams in the Frenchj league still have the opportunity to buy and players until the end of August, France Football have reported that Europa League finalists Marseille have rejected the chance to bring him across the Channel.

Llorente would have had similar excellent attacking support at the Stade Vélodrome, with former Premier League players Florian Thauvin and Dimitri Payet providing immeasurable quality in support, and would be competing with former Fulham man Konstantinos Mitroglou for the focal point.

Though this dream move doesn’t appear to be coming into fruition, if Llorente doesn’t fancy travelling far afield as France, big-spending West Ham may still be a possibility, with Manuel Pellegrini are also purported to be interested in bringing the forward in on a similar loan deal.

The Mirror suggests that, with Jordan Hugill moving on loan to Championship side Middlesbrough, a space has opened up for Llorente at the London Stadium and whilst the deadline to sign players on permanent deals for the clubs in the top tier has now been imposed, loan deals are still viable.

Despite Llorente working alongside his agent to engineer a move from the club where the Spaniard will find it nigh on impossible to displace Harry Kane, it would ultimately be highly surprising if Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino allowed him to exit the club this summer.

If so, it would leave the aforementioned Kane and the disappointing Dutchman Vincent Janssen as the only recognised strikers at the club, these modest options exacerbated by Spurs’ failure to bring in any new signings to play at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium in 18/19.
