Manchester City have wasted no time in finding their Ilkay Gundogan replacement as Mateo Kovacic has joined the treble winners on a four-year deal from Chelsea.

The Croatian has cost the European and Premier League champions around £25 million and for what he can add to the side, this could be an absolute steal. Kovacic has spent the past five seasons with the Blues and the former Real Madrid midfielder always looked like he was playing for the wrong side.

During his time at Stamford Bridge he played under several different managers whose conflicting approaches left Chelsea without an identity.

When you’re a midfielder who likes to play on the front foot and on the turn, it must’ve been difficult to flourish during this period. Nonetheless, we saw what Kovacic could offer as he is a gifted all-round midfielder.

He is strong in the tackle, can pick out a pass and has no issues with gliding past defenders. His tenacious energy makes him an asset both in and out of possession. Not to mention he loves to drive the ball forward.  To put it simply, he’s a bona fide Pep Guardiola player.

The 29-year-old has been tailored for a possession-based team and now that he is going to be based at the Etihad Stadium, to fill the void left by Gundogan, he can flourish. He may not have as much of an eye for goal as the German did but Guardiola will aid Kovacic in adding goals to his game.

They don’t come around often but Kovacic is no stranger to scoring sublime strikes. There was his exquisite strike against RB Salzburg in the Champions League and then his outstanding volley against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Kovacic collected four trophies during his time in west London and he has already expressed his desire to help Manchester City continue their dominance. A fresh chapter beckons in the north west and he now has the chance to make a huge impression on the Premier League in a system more fitting of his attributes.

Manchester City’s new number eight has a lot to live up to in comparison to his predecessor, but in terms of replacing Gundogan’s invaluable contributions, the club might have found themselves a worthy replacement.
