Floyd Mayweather commits to a year of exhibition matches, there’s talk of Mike Tyson’s next opponent and one boxer has called on promoters to make the best fights possible. It’s been another busy week in boxing, so here are five stories you might have missed...
Floyd Mayweather Says He Wants To Fight 50 Cent After Logan Paul
Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition bout against YouTuber Logan Paul might be postponed for the time being but that hasn’t stopped him from planning ahead, with the 50-0 boxer announcing on Instagram that he is targeting fights with Logan’s brother, Jake, and rapper 50 Cent.
Mayweather said: "This year I will focus on several exhibitions. I will have an exhibition in Tokyo, Japan, again.
"Of course the one with Logan Paul and I; and if Jake Paul can get past his next opponent Ben Askren, I will have an exhibition with him as well. I also heard that 50 Cent would fight me but claims I'm too small. If he wants to lace up at the end of the year, we can do an exhibition then. I don't care about weight class with any of these guys.
"The Paul brothers will make great money with the events, but with 50 Cent it has to be 'winner takes all'."
Dereck Chisora Calls Out Joseph Parker Over "Unfinished Business"
Dereck Chisora is looking to bounce back from his loss to Oleksandr Usyk in October and has set his sights on Joseph Parker. The Brit and New Zealander were meant to fight back in 2019 but Parker had to pull out with just three-and-a-half weeks' notice after suffering from the nasty after-affects of a spider bite.
‘Del Boy’ uploaded a fight poster to Twitter with the two heavyweights on and captioned the post ‘WAR is coming @joeboxerparker.’ Parker is currently gearing up for an all-Kiwi heavyweight clash with amateur rival Junior Fa, but should he come out of that fight unscathed then a fight with Chisora seems like a logical next step.
Evander Holyfield Claims Trilogy Fight With Mike Tyson Is Close
Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield shared two of the most famous heavyweight matches of the 1990s, the second fight concluding with one of the most infamous moments in boxing history, and now the two legends could step into the ring with one another once again.
In November, Mike Tyson returned to the ring after 15 years away to fight Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition match which resulted in a draw. It is now being reported that Holyfield is in talks with the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ for a multi-million dollar trilogy fight in the Middle East.
Speaking on the Last Stand Podcast, Holyfield seemed to confirm this when asked about fighting his former foe, stating: “I think that fight’s close, I think it’s something we both want to do.”
Oleksandr Usyk Vs Joe Joyce Coming In April?
Joe Joyce has revealed that a mouth-watering heavyweight clash between himself and Oleksandr Usyk is ‘almost confirmed’ for April and has vowed to knock out a man he’s all too familiar with.
The pair met in the World Series of Boxing eight years ago as amateurs, a bout which the Ukrainian won on points. This time though ‘The Juggernaut’ says it will be different and believes he’s evolved as a fighter since they last met. Speaking to BT Sport Boxing, the 35-year-old said: “'It's looking like April. The negotiations seem to be going well and it looks like the fight is going nicely and it's almost confirmed.
“I can't wait. Back in the gym, getting ready. I think I'm going to go for the knockout, the stoppage. I'm going to stop his feet.”
Teofimo Lopez Calls On Promoters To Make The Big Fights Happen
Unified WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez has called on boxing promoters to make the biggest fights possible in boxing. Taking to his Twitter, the 23-year-old Brooklyn fighter pleaded: “In order for us to bring boxing back to its fullest, we have to fight the fights that are 50/50 competition.
“This is a PSA to all the promoters and fighters. Quit being prideful and make the fights happen! It’s not hard! Promoters stop trying to make more money than the fighters.”
It’s a commendable stance from Lopez, our 2020 Fighter of the Year, a boxer who's already proved his willingness to fight the very best having beaten Vasyl Lomachenko last year.
