Michael Scudamore claims mud-loving Mysteree is in the ‘form of his life’ as he targets Chepstow’s prestigious Welsh National this afternoon at 2.05pm.
A winner of Newcastle’s big staying prize, the Eider, the ten-year-old gets optimum conditions ahead of the test in South Wales. He was a runner-up in the Midlands National last March, but is better coming back from a break.
He is two from two on heavy ground, as he bids to give the yard a second win in this race following Monbeg Dude’s win in 2012.
"He's such a laid-back character,” Scudamore told At The Races.
"He did his final piece of work on Tuesday morning and seems all primed for the big day.
“He does handle very heavy ground. He'll go on most grounds. He certainly looks a bit stronger and is working better than ever. I hope he can keep on the upgrade."
Fergal O’Brien’s Midlands National hero Chase The Spud is another who will relish the heavy ground at Chepstow.
The ten-year-old was an impressive six length winner in a good race at Haydock, and faces a 9lb rise from the handicapper.
"Paddy (Brennan) schooled him on Monday and he jumped really well so we are looking forward to it," said O'Brien.
"He has got a lot of weight, but he has earned that weight. He will love the ground and trip so there are a lot of boxes ticked.”
Raz De Maree finished second behind the fantastic Native River last year, and the Irish challenger is rated only 1lb higher.
Beware The Bear proved an impressive winner on his seasonal return at Newcastle last time, and will hope to give trainer Nicky Henderson his first National winner.
Wild West Wind won the Welsh National trial last month and faces a 5lb rise from the handicapper, but Tom George’s nine-year-old is three from four over fences.
Former pointer Ask The Weatherman runs for Jack Barber, whilst Kerry Lee runs pair Alfie Spinner and Bishop’s Road.
2014 winner Emperor’s Choice was a good winner at Haydock just after Christmas, whilst Sue Smith’s Vintage Clouds is an improving prospect and shaped well when second at Haydock last time.
Two time Scottish National winner Vicente joins Evan Williams trio Pobbles Bay, On The Road and Firebird Flyer.
Buckhorn Timothy, Rathlin Rose, Silsol, Final Nudge and O'Faolains Boy also feature.
TIP: The Welsh Grand National is always a competitive race. Pobble’s Bay could run very well whilst Mysteree looks to have a big chance and gets my verdict. He has been saved for this race and can go well. Milansbar is a great each-way bet after what looked a very encouraging third place finish last time out. Beware The Bear is another I fancy. On The Road could go well.
