08:01, 07 May 2018

A volunteer at the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire race at a very near miss when a car ploughed into the traffic island he was marshaling.

The incident happened during the final stage of the Tour de Yorkshire from Halifax to Leeds, and it was a good thing that the marshal was quick on his feet.

Stood on a traffic island off a blind bend, the volunteer's job is to wave a flag to alert the cyclists and their following support teams (who follow the race in cars) so they know to avoid the bollard. With the cyclist already having passed the bollard, the marshal stops flagging for a second before the support car piles straight through, nearly taking the man with him. Quick on his feet, the marshal spotted the danger and managed to run out of the way, a lucky near miss.

The car was part of the Team Astana support team.

The winner on the day was Stephane Rossetto who rode solo for almost 80km to take the stage in fine style, with the race winner Greg Van Avermaet for BMC Racing. The Belgium winning by over nine minutes

The footage was taken by Nathan Currie who was watching the race, one of millions of fans who lined the streets of Yorkshire over the last four days. At the time of writing neither The Tour of Yorkshire, UCI or Team Astana made a statement over the incident, one of which could have caused serious injury or worst.
