The explosive touchline row which saw Jose Mourinho have to be restrained at Stamford Bridge yesterday could have happened moments earlier.
New TV footage shows that Chelsea assistant Marco Ianni taunted the Manchester United boss not once but TWICE as he celebrated a stoppage time equaliser from Ross Barkley.
After the game, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri said he had apologised to his opposite number about the incident, admitted his team "were on the wrong side." Mourinho accepted the apology and told reporters to forget about it. Today it has been reported that the FA may launch an enquiry into the incident.
Manchester United looked like becoming the first team to beat Chelsea in the league this season as they led 2-1 deep into stoppage time. Two goals from Anthony Martial saw the Reds overhaul a first-half effort from Antonio Rudiger.
Sarri's assistant Ianni not only celebrated in front of Mourinho before running off down the touchline but said something on his way back to the technical area which is what really sparked the incident as the United boss shot out of his seat to confront him. Staff from both sides had to intervene resulting in ugly scenes which threatened to spill onto the pitch.
It's fair to say not many people knew much about Ianni prior to yesterday's flashpoint. He followed Sarri to Stamford Bridge from Napoli and retired from playing aged 32 before moving into coaching. As a defensive midfielder, Ianni played in the lower leagues of Italian football.
