Newport Manager Michael Flynn Eyes Up “Biggest FA Cup Shock Ever” Against Manchester City
13:58, 15 Feb 2019

We are expected another cracking weekend of FA Cup action this weekend, with the main focus being on Newport County as they host Manchester City in the tie of the round. The League Two side have already knocked out Leicester and Middlesbrough in the competition this season but Flynn knows the size of the task at hand.

“If we win this, whether it’s extra time or penalties and I don’t care how we do it, it will be the biggest shock in FA Cup history.

“I say that with the biggest respect to other big giant-killings.

“My reasons for that are because of the sheer gulf in finances, the quality of the players Man City have, the level they are playing at, and that they have the best manager in the world right now.

“So for those reasons it will be the biggest shock the FA Cup has ever seen.”

Newport currently lie down in 15th in League Two, in what has been a difficult campaign for the south Wales sides. In the league, they have won just two games since November which has seen them slide down the table after a promising start to the season.

However in the FA Cup, especially at Rodney Parade it has been a completely different kettle of fish. They have seen off Metropolitan Police, Wrexham, Leicester and Middlesbrough to reach the fifth round and now they face the top team in English football and potentially the whole of Europe. Having seen Manchester City demolish lower league opposition like Burton (9-0) and Rotherham (7-0) already this season, it really would be spectacular if Newport can avoid defeat.
