Norwich City Snatch Last Gasp Equaliser To Break Ipswich Town Hearts

Norwich City scored a last-gasp equaliser seven seconds from time to break Ipswich Town hearts in the East Anglian Derby.

Ipswich thought they had finally ended nine years of hurt in this fixture after Luke Chambers powered home a header in the 89th minute to put the visitors ahead.

However, it was not to be as in a dramatic finale the Canaries snatched a 95th minute leveller courtesy of a header from Timm Klose, to send the home support into raptures, while it left the visiting fans sick to their stomachs.

The result moved both clubs up a place in the table - above Leeds who play Bristol City later today - with Ipswich now in 11th and Norwich City in 12th, both on 45 points, and seven points adrift of the play-offs with 14 matches remaining.

Both teams burst out of the blocks at a sunny Carrow Road, with the opening 45 minutes played at a rapid tempo. Ipswich may not have won an East Anglian Derby in nine games heading into the match, but it was Mick McCarthy’s men who made a statement of intent early on as Jonas Kudson headed wide at the far post when he really should have at least found the target, while Joe Garner was denied by Norwich keeper Angus Gunn.

James Maddison struggled to get into the game as the hosts failed to muster a single shot on target in the first half. However, within two minutes of the restart 21-year-old stung the palms of Bartosz Bialkowski with a rasping free-kick. Then, from the resulting corner Timm Klose found himself in acres of space on the six-yard area, only to completely scuff his effort when a goal seemed inevitable.

Maddison, a bystander in the first-half, was involved in every single Norwich move in the second, and with 20 minutes remaining he fired another free-kick in on goal, but Bialkowski once again palmed the ball out for a corner. The Polish shot-stopper had a stand-out 94 minutes as he then pulled off a cracking save to deny a powerful effort from Nelson Oliveira, getting down low to turn the ball past the post.

Those saves looked to have proved pivotal as Chambers sent a bullet header into the back of the Norwich net in the 89th minute. However, Bialkowski then got caught out in the 95th minute, rushing out of his goal in an attempt to clear the ball, only for Grant Hanley to get there in front of him, with the Norwich player whipping in a brilliant ball to Klose who headed home the equaliser.
