Oleksandr Usyk Promoter Targeting Undisputed Clash With Tyson Fury In Early 2023

Alex Krassyuk has also stated that if Fury and Usyk don't meet, Daniel Dubois could take the Gypsy King's place

An undisputed heavyweight title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk could happen in early 2023, according to the Ukrainian’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk.

Usyk, who holds the WBA, IBF and WBO world titles, will be ringside at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Fury vs Derek Chisora this weekend and Krassyuk believes that a fight between him and the WBC champion could take place between February and March, providing that Fury emerges from his third fight with ‘Del-Boy’ unscathed and, more importantly, is willing to accept the challenge.

“We are here to make a statement that Usyk is on the way,” Krassyuk told Betfred’s Lightweight Boxing Show.

“He aims for the undisputed, this is the only thing he wants. He doesn’t want to go through all the mandatories, he wants to go straight to glory, the legacy, the heritage - so this is the fight that most of the fans in the world want to see.

“An undisputed heavyweight fight has never happened before in the four belt era, there is not a single heavyweight who obtained all four belts at the same time. I mean this is history in the making and you cannot find any reason for justifying yourself not taking this fight. I mean, if you are a man, if you respect your fans, if you respect boxing as a sport, your favourite sport, you can not get the excuse not to fight Usyk.

“At this stage, we haven’t got many things to discuss, most of them were said before. Everyone is on board; Queensberry Promotions is on board, K2 is here, Usyk’s team, Usyk himself, our partners from the Middle East are ready and willing to stage this fight - so the only thing that is still pending is the concern of a bald, tall, gypsy man to get beaten.

“We have a time slot between February 18th and March 4th in our mind to put this fight, but it all depends on the result of how it's going to finish on Saturday because even though Fury is declared the winner, he still might be injured, broken bone, broken nose or whatever - that might put him on a longer run for the undisputed. That’s why we wish both fighters most of the luck to get healthy out of the fight.”

A third fight between Fury and Chisora has been met with some criticism within the world of boxing, with the Gypsy King having beaten his fellow Briton twice already in 2011 and 2014. However, Krassyuk believes that it should be an entertaining fight in north London and although Fury is the heavy favourite to win, he won’t rule out “warrior” Chisora pulling off the upset.

“It’s a great match because you shouldn’t underestimate Chisora. Chisora is a great man, he has a big heart, he is a warrior in the ring.

“I remember him fighting Usyk and he performed things that nobody expected him to, the stances he made, those unexpected things. And that was a really close fight.

“I’m not justifying Usyk, although he was injured - he had some troubles with elbows during the fight - but still, Chisora did a really, really good job.

“This time, you see he is very relaxed, he has nothing to lose, but Tyson is not. Tyson has a lot to lose because if he loses this fight, he loses the opportunity to become undisputed, he loses all the respect and glory he used to get during the last several years.”

British heavyweight Daniel Dubois is in action on Saturday’s undercard, defending his WBA (regular) strap against Kevin Lerena. Should Fury not fight Usyk next, ‘DDD’ could find himself in the opposite corner of the unified world champion instead.

“According to the rotational system that exists now in the heavyweight division, WBA is next.

“So most likely if something goes wrong we are probably going to look at the mandatories that we have and Daniel Dubois is first in line.”
