Open Championship Marshals Need To Beware Of Potty Mouth Ian Poulter

Tempers can run high in the incredibly frustrating and infuriating sport of golf, just as a marshal found out over the weekend during the Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club when he was on the wrong end of a reported verbal lashing from Ian Poulter, with whom he has labelled an “a***hole”.

Volunteer Quintin Jardine, a best-selling crime author who is a member at Gullane, penned a 450-word blog - and letter to the European Tour - during which he lambasted Poulter’s behaviour after an incident between the pair that occurred during Poulter’s third round.

Passionate Poulter, who is a 60/1 shot for Open Championship glory this week, skewed his drive off the first hole into the bushes, then after he arrived on the scene he reportedly demanded to know where his ball was.

Jardine said he informed the golfer, who is famed for wearing his heart on his sleeve, that he did not know the exact location of the ball and did not want to go into the bush for fear of standing on the ball, only for Poulter to then fire a “shower of expletives” in his direction.

He then went on to say:

"I wasn't expecting thanks, but I wasn't expecting aggression either.

"He told me in essence that I should have, his reasoning being that if I stood on the ball it was a free drop, whereas if he did it was a penalty.

"Basically I take no s*** from no man. Industrial language doesn't bother me, but truculent aggression does.

"I'm not asking for him to be fined, because I don't see the point of that. However I would like him to be reminded that even though most of the world knows you're an a***hole, there's no need to go proving it to the rest.

"I will take his apology as read, but if he wants to make it in person, I'm not hard to find in Gullane."

As is the way of the world these days Poulter took to social media to give his side of the story - see tweet above.

The 42-year-old described Jardine’s account of abusive language as “extremely sad”, and instead stated that he merely vented his frustrated at himself, not the author.

Jardine has since posted another message on his blog:

“Mr Poulter has gone public to his two million Twitter followers with his version of events. All I can say is that I stand by mine and at no time did I ever utter the words ‘OK thanks.’ What I did say was ‘Vive Les Belges.’ Now I wish I’d said ‘Come on you Spurs,’ as that really would have pushed his buttons.

“I still hope to hear from him, but I don’t expect to. That won’t bother me, not a bit.”

Marshals at this week's Open Championship will now no doubt be hoping that a wayward Poulter shot does not find their patch.

Meanwhile, the man himself has been paired alongside double US Open champion Brooks Koepka, who goes on the hunt for his third major in his last five appearances, and Australian Cameron Smith with the trio teeing-off at 2.59pm on Thursday afternoon.
