Popular trainer Fergal O’Brien is seeking a first Grade One victory as Poetic Rhythm lines up in Newbury’s Challow Hurdle this afternoon.
The six-year-old landed the prestigious Persian War at Chepstow, before bumping into Nicky Henderson talented On The Blind Side at Cheltenham last time out.
The heavy ground is something the three-time winner has yet to experience, but he remains a live candidate in West Berkshire.
"The ground is the big question,” said the Gloucestershire-based trainer.
“We're sure he's good enough and it just depends on how he handles conditions on the day.
"He ran very well at Cheltenham and we feel he'll want three miles in time, so the trip is fine. What will be will be."
Warren Greatrex is optimistic outsider Mulcahys Hill can spring a surprise on his second start over hurdles.
The five-year-old won well on his hurdling debut at Ffos Las and takes a steep step up in class for today’s assignment.
"We wouldn't even be contemplating it if the ground wasn't so testing, but I know my horse loves it and he'll go through it when others won't,” said Berkshire-based Greatrex.
"It's going to be tough going and there are only six runners, so we felt it was worth a shot."
Colin Tizzard’s Kilbricken Storm was an impressive winner at Cheltenham last time, whilst Dame Rose won well on her last start here.
Way Back Then runs for Ben Pauling, who won this two years back with Barter’s Hill.
TIP: Poetic Rhythm has the profile to continue improving in this race, although the ground is a big question mark. His Cheltenham run was very good and he could play a leading role here. Nicky Henderson pair Royal Ruby and Brave Eagle could go well, Nayati is another who is well regarded for Alan King.
