Like it or not, comparisons will always be made between two of the greatest footballers of all-time, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Portuguese superstar bagged an amazing hat-trick to fire Juventus through to the last eight of the Champions League, just when they needed him most.
Trailing 2-0 after the first leg, Ronaldo scored two towering headers before converting a penalty to keep Juve’s hopes of winning the European trophy alive, exactly why the signed him in the first place. Now, all eyes will be on Lionel Messi tonight to see if he can do something equally as mesmerising against Lyon in the last 16.
Ronaldo has now scored an incredible 124 Champions League goals in total and that figure looks set to keep rising as Juve progress. Messi, is now eighteen goals behind his biggest rival, but he does have the advantage when it comes to this season’s tournament.
The little Argentine has already hit six goals this campaign at a stunning rate of one every 65 minutes in Europe. He is currently two goals behind Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski and level with former Southampton man Dusan Tadic and Moussa Marega of Porto. A couple of goals tonight would put him well in contention to win the Golden Boot, although it will be silly to rule out Cristiano Ronaldo, who turns things on in the knockout stages and is currently on four goals.
Barcelona fans will not want to admit it, but Cristiano Ronaldo stole the limelight last night. It is up to their little genius to make sure they make it through and show everyone who really is the best player in the world.
