If Time magazine produced a Person of the Year based solely on football, then Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé would be a bonafide cert to grace the front cover of the 2018 edition.
The French teenager’s rise to the top has been nothing short of stunning and full of zest, and it has been our privilege - as football fans - to witness it, only at the very baptism of a long, hopefully glittering career.
At just 19 years old, Mbappé has won a brace of Ligue 1 titles, won the treble in his first full season at PSG, the FIFA World Cup, and the Best Young Player award at the same tournament.
With the world literally at his feet, in a recent interview with ESPN Brazil, Mbappé was asked how he would design the player who he models himself on
"[Lionel] Messi's left foot, Neymar's right foot, Cristiano Ronaldo's mentality and [Gianluigi] Buffon's class," he told ESPN.
When further questioned as to where he sees himself in this smorgasbord of stardom, the Frenchman - humbly - replied,
"Which Mbappe's part? There's no need, it's good just like this!"
It is surely a mighty collection of some of the world’s greatest talent to play the game over the past 20 years, and it will be surely interesting to see if Mbappé's undeniable quality is included in a similar compilation when the next bright young thing is asked who he models himself on, many years from now.
Mbappé currently finds himself at around 12/1 to win this year's Ballon d'Or.
So how would you compile your perfect player? Would you attach Mario Balotelli’s shoulder? Vinnie Jones’ wandering hands? Andrea Pirlo’s unrelenting oozing of charisma? Patrice Evra’s love for life? Or Alisson’s love-length?
- Mbappe: 60 goals and 6 trophies
- Messi: 14 goals and 5 trophies
- Ronaldo: 13 goals and 2 trophies
